Timor

Timor - the largest island in the group of the Lesser Sunda wasps centers Malay Archipelago. An area of about 34,000 square kilometers. The southwestern part of the island   - of territories of Indonesia, the north-eastern part is occupied full-time state of East Timor. Dominated by mountains up to 2950 meters height, there are mud volcanoes. The climate is sub-equatorial monsoon; they warm the air on the beach all year round 25-27 ° C, rainfall of about 1500 mm, the dry season lasts from May to November.

Kupang Dili

Dominated by tropical monsoon forest and tall-grass savannas. There are numerous plantations of rice, corn, coffee tree, coconut tree. Main cities:  Kupang (Indonesia), Dili (East Timor).

The central part of Timor covered with small mountains and rainforest and savannas. Low plains to the coast of the island, and they form a complex of mangrove plants. Climate Timor is largely dependent on monsoon circulation: in the south-east monsoon dry season comes. It ends with the beginning of the north-west monsoon, which occurs from December to March. On the coast of the island are tropical forests of eucalyptus trees, bamboo and sandalwood. In the interior regions of the island are grass savannahs. In these regions, the flora and fauna is much poorer than the other islands in the Sunda group. In Timor are rare species of plants and animals typical of Australia.

Attractions State of East Timor

East Timor - not the most popular tourist attraction in the region. In itself, however, the country is, the will of the history of the place which was the clash of different cultures and religions, is a rather interesting place. Here, there are no unique historical monuments and natural sites, but there is a lot of unexplored places, no crowds of tourists and recreation infrastructure, but an abundance of relict beaches and rich marine life.

Dili

The capital of East Timor lies on the northern coast of the island, on the shore of the bay is a small open. It is a pleasant town with strong Portuguese features, like an old villa surrounded by a road along the beach, the old palace of the Palacio do-Governador or massive old building garrison built in 1627. Most of Dili was destroyed in 1999 during the armed conflict with Indonesian troops, and many of the houses still bear the "scars" of bullets. Long waterfront boulevard is quite a pleasant place of trade and entertainment, evening walks or picnics on weekends.

This true Catholic city has many churches, and a massive statue of Christ crowns the top of Cape Fatukama like the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro. Magnificent crescent coast around the monument is replete with charming grottos (only on the way to the top of a rocky promontory can be seen 14 of them), great beach areas, restaurants and bars. From the top of a great view, but the viewing platform is often not safe, because it's full of trivial burglars, so it is advisable to check the current situation with the police, before heading here.

Palacio do-Governador

Place of worship of the local inhabitants - Santa Cruz cemetery in the south-east of the city. This quiet old necropolis in the south-east of the city was the site of a bloody massacre by Indonesian security forces in 1991, and thus became a real monument to the struggle for independence. Here you can also see a lot of large decorative tombstones in the Portuguese style and a lot of old crypts. Another attraction of the city - National Museum of East Timor (founded in 1995) with good by local standards, a collection of religious art, products of traditional crafts, musical instruments, and historical documents. Also noteworthy is the library Xanana (Hanan), with its extensive collection of photos and videos, and a collection of documents on the history of Timor (by the way, this is one of the few places in the capital, where you can find low-cost access to the Internet). Traditional market on Avenida Américo Almrante-Thomas can be used as place of purchase or local arts and crafts products, and as a good place for observation of local customs and traditions.

Statue of Christ

In the area of Dili, there are some good beach places, especially popular site for scuba diving at Cape Fatukama. The most famous resort area - a protected cove Arey Branca, also known as Pasir Putih ("White Sands"), 3 km to the east of Dili. From the road separates the beach park with banyan trees and small cafes, and fishermen unload their catch right on the beach that allows you to buy fresh seafood here. Nearby is no less popular beach Jesús Baksayd Beach, which can pass only pre rising to the base of the statue of Christ, and then go down to the shore line on a fairly steep trail and Liquica the famous beach of black sand, framed by long awaited in local hot climate shady palms. To the west of Dili, along the beautiful coastal road, also runs a whole series of good banks, besides local residents actively traded right along the highway fruits and fish at quite modest prices for this country, so many foreigners prefer to rest on these roadside beaches.

Also worth visiting in the small fishing village of Kom with a small beach and excellent conditions for fishing, to see the old colonial building Pouzada-Tutuala (today the small hotel) and the nearby petroglyphs on the cliffs near the town of the same name at the north-east of the island.

Pasir Putih ("White Sands")

On the way to Tutualu is how the traditional way of life of local residents, visiting the village Iralfai, which preserved many of the old houses on stilts "mind-lulik" and conducted excavations on the site of one of the earliest human settlements on the island (the sacred cemetery Loutra Erin behind the village, according to the natives, "it was always"). And lying west of the capital town of Maubara can visit the fort XVII century with a powerful coastal wall and old guns.

South of the capital, in the mountainous central part of the island, lies the old city Maubisse (Mobissa) Ermera and Aileu. This region is the center of growth than the Timorese coffee (from June to September, you can see the harvest) and very color itself. From Maubisse with his old government rest house (now a hotel Pousada Maubisse) begins most hiking to the highest point of the island - Mount Ramelau (Tatamailau, 2963 m), as well as to the picturesque town Hatubuiliko (Athos Builko) at its base, to the mountain Loelako near Maliana, and through areas Bobonaro and Marobu with their traditional villages of mountain peoples and thousands of mountain river with waterfalls. Mountains and deep valleys, stunning Alpine landscape witch traditional farms nation mambae, humid rain forests and magnificent panoramas - that the major charm of this place.

Atauro Island

Best place to stay by the sea is traditionally considered lying right in front of the capital island of Atauro - the former location of the Portuguese colonial administration. Get on this beautiful, heavily overgrown with bushes island with several small mountain villages and often difficult, as the ferry goes here no more than 2-3 times a week ($ 3-5 per passenger). However, in the harbor of Dili you can rent a boat ($ 10-50 per person) or boat ($ 25 per flight without limiting the number of passengers) at virtually any time. Atauro has a very pleasant atmosphere and unspoiled environment, and the waters around it constantly watching dolphins and other cetaceans, and that makes it a popular spot for snorkeling. Now here is built a small resort Tua-Coin, near which is titled beach - the best snorkeling on the coast. Here is excellent and sea fishing - just catch the local fishermen are the overwhelming part of the range of capital markets.

Baucau

The second largest city in East Timor, Baucau  lies halfway from the capital to the Cape Cape pile (the most eastern point of the island) and is considered one of the coolest places in the country. The city is famous for numerous examples of Portuguese colonial architecture, its coastline with clear water and clean beaches (especially good beaches near Suai, but the road to these places usually becomes completely impassable during the wet season). The forests in this region have been an important source of timber, primarily precious sandalwood, teak and vanilla during the Portuguese period, but the barbaric methods of harvesting during Indonesian rule greatly reduced this valuable resource. Today, young plantations of wood can also serve as a kind of landmark.

Los Palos

The Los Palos  lies to the east of the island and is the most pristine place of human activity throughout Timor. Here you can find a pretty large chunks of dry tropical forest covering the low mountain areas, fantastic beaches, ancient coral reefs and the main decoration of the region - the National Park of Jaco. In addition, in Los Palos discovered cave paintings near the town Lautem, several ancient places of worship of the indigenous population of the island, as well as numerous habitats of endemic creatures, including 25 protected species of birds.

Irabere

Beautiful south coast of East Timor as the best island destination for outdoor activities. Moreover, these regions are famous for very friendly and hospitable people, and beautiful scenery. This part of East Timor has poor road network and is dissected by many rivers, which in the wet season turned into raging streams, washes away all in its path. Therefore, a visit to these places often turns into a real extreme, but the reward of a trip will be one of the most pristine landscapes in the region.

Oecusse

Isolated coastal enclave of Oecusse is located on West Timor, politically as part of East Timor. But geographically and culturally it is certainly still part of Indonesia. Small population of the enclave are fairly evenly scattered about the countryside, largely consisting of traditional thatched huts, resembling a beehive.

Pantemakassar himself as the old city is often referred to Oecusse, was the first permanent settlement on the Portuguese island. This is a "sleepy" coastal town, sandwiched between the hills and the line of the ocean. The coral reef is here about ten meters from the shore, in a clean local water offers spectacular snorkeling. The once-popular tourist old Portuguese fort, known as Fatusuba (Fatsuba), lies on a hill 1.5 km to the south of the city. He almost suffered a tragic injury in 1999 and now is a quiet place with a good view and great views of the sunset. Here, too, are constantly held local religious festivals, since the complex is a local shrine - a grotto with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Lifan town, which lies 5 km to the west of Oecusse, is one of the first settlements in the Portuguese Timor and the first capital of the Portuguese colonial province of Timor (in 1769 the capital was moved from the bodice in Dili). There is a nice beach, and a monument of the first landing of Europeans on the island.
